How to write in a playful cursive style with big loops
All you need for this writing style is a pen and paper.
You can use any pen or marker you have!
Time needed: 10 minutes
Here are the steps to try this playful cursive writing style with exaggerated loops.
- Write in a cursive style.
Start by writing out a word in regular cursive.
- Find any loops in the word.
Look for any letters with loops or tails (examples: h, g, k, y).
- Rewrite the word, making the loops really big this time.
Make those loops really big and exaggerated! To accentuate them more, you can also make the other parts of the letters even smaller than usual.
- “Bounce” letters up and down (optional).
To make it even more playful, “bounce” the letters up and down by varying the baseline of the letters.
Using lined paper or some sort of guidelines is very helpful for keeping your handwriting extra neat as you do this!
Writing words letter by letter instead of all at once also helps ensure that your writing looks neat and intentional.

(I used an Artist’s Loft size 08 drawing pen in the example above.)
This writing style is cute, playful, and fun to do! It’s great for greeting cards, handwritten notes, journaling headers… pretty much anywhere you do writing.

Variations to try
Here are some fun variations on this handwriting style that you can try!
1. Make it scribbly
To give it an even more playful look, you can loosely go over your writing a few times more.
This adds some extra, messy lines to the letters that make them look more full while still keeping it light and fun.

2. Use a bigger or smaller pen
You can easily change the look of your writing just by changing the pen you use.
Try this style with a thicker pen that has a bolder tip (like these) or small fineliner pens (like these) and see what you like best!

It’s also nice to get a set of pens like these that has a whole variety of tip sizes to experiment with.
3. Vary the angles of the letters
To make this writing style look extra playful, you can change up the angle of the letters a little bit.
This can be helpful when the big loops sometimes get in the way of the other letters!
You can curve and angle some letters, and “bounce” others up and down, to fit the letters together without anything looking too crowded.
