7 Reasons Why Calligraphy Will Become Your New Favorite Hobby
If you didn’t already know you want to get into calligraphy, let me share 7 reasons why you must give it a try!
If you just want a free guide on how to get started, check out this post.
Calligraphy is the perfect creative outlet for many reasons and might just become your new favorite pastime.
Take it from me who started doing this for fun seven years ago and has been obsessed with it ever since ๐
1. It’s inexpensive
Did you know calligraphy is not an expensive hobby to pick up?
You can get brush pens and paper for around $20, and then decide if you want to spend more on worksheets or a class.
Yes, it’s (very) easy to spend a lot on all the pens and kits and books and supplies… but not necessary at all.
So if you want to try calligraphy and see if you like it, you can get started for really cheap.
You can even start with just a pencil and a lined notebook!

2. There are many ways to use calligraphy
In case you haven’t already thought of all the ways lettering skills would be useful, let me give you some ideas!
You can…
- Make your own decor for your home (or for events)
- Give personalized gifts like ornaments, wall art, bookmarks, etc.
- Do special custom projects for yourself or family/friends
- Make your own greeting cards with a handmade touch
- Add cute calligraphy to your bullet journal or notes
Once you know how to do calligraphy, you’ll be using it everywhere!

3. It’s something for YOU
Sometimes you need something just for you.
Something that you enjoy and that fills you up, even when life around you is crazy.
Calligraphy can be this relaxing outlet you need.
You can keep coming back to it and finding some peace among the stress – just by slowing down, getting lost in the strokes, and doing something you enjoy.
4. It’s calming and helps relieve stress
On that same note, doing calligraphy is very calming and therapeutic, and it can help relieve stress and anxiety.
I know it certainly has for me.
I guess it’s because of how slow it is and the repetitive movements you make as you do it. There’s something calming about it.
And, once you’ve built up muscle memory in your hand, you often don’t even have to think about the strokes – you just do them out of habit.
Maybe you already know how relaxing it can be to watch lettering videos. Well, it’s just as relaxing to do it yourself!
Something I’ve done a lot of is write my thoughts in calligraphy. Like journaling, but in calligraphy… getting thoughts out of my head while making it look pretty.
5. It’s an impressive skill
Would you agree with this one?
Calligraphy is an impressive skill because not only is it really beautiful, but it also takes a dedication to practicing an art form that not everyone has.
Learning how to control a brush pen takes some practice, but once you’ve gotten the hang of it you can do amazing things with that pen!
You might just be the only one in your family that can write so fancy ๐
And even though calligraphy is an old art that’s been around for thousands of years, it’s still popular today and you can see examples of it everywhere.
Modern styles of lettering are more common now than the old styles, but still serve the purpose of turning written words into a beautiful form of art!

6. It’s an off-screen activity
We could all probably use more of these, couldn’t we?
Instead of turning to your phone when you have some downtime, try having fun with pens and paper!
Making something with your hands and being creative – instead of scrolling on a screen – is both rewarding and relaxing.
And in a digital age when we don’t write by hand as often, it’s more valuable than ever to practice the art of writing beautifully.
7. It’s a lot of fun
To me, this is one of the biggest reasons to get into calligraphy!
Using colorful pens and paper and writing pretty letters is FUN.
You can write your favorite quotes or verses, write cute seasonal things, or doodle in your journal with markers and pens.
Places like Instagram and Pinterest, art stores, books, or even just your surroundings are great ways to get inspired.
It’s also fun to take pictures of your artwork and share it (if you’re interested in that sort of thing).
So tell me…
…have I convinced you to give calligraphy a try yet?
If you’re ready to try calligraphy for yourself, I’d love to show you how to get started in the best way for success.
